Why I still study English in the AI era

Even with powerful translation tools, I still spend thirty minutes a day learning English. For me, it is a way to stay close to first-hand information and keep a learning mindset alive.

A lot of people assume English matters less in the AI era because translation is becoming easier and better. For me, the opposite has happened. I have become more certain that learning English is still worth it.

It is not about exams or formal job requirements. It serves two practical purposes for me: getting closer to first-hand information and keeping myself in an active learning state.

Why I still want direct access to English content

I regularly check X for product updates, industry discussion, and technology news. The more I read, the more obvious it becomes that a lot of Chinese content is still built on top of those original sources.

If the source material already lives in English, I naturally start asking a simple question: why not read it directly? Once English becomes a usable tool again, the psychological barrier to information drops a lot and understanding feels more immediate.

Learning English is also a way to train my state

I am an indie developer. Working alone means I need steady input, steady judgment, and steady action.

That is one reason I picked English back up and now spend thirty minutes a day on it. The value is not just what I learn on a given day. It is the reminder that I should not stop moving, stop updating myself, or stop learning.

What matters is not only what tools can do for you. It is whether you still keep the habit of learning actively.

The stronger AI gets, the less I want to lose the habit of learning

AI can absolutely help with translation and summarization. That part is real. But the stronger those tools become, the more I feel that human initiative still matters.

For me, learning English is no longer just about language. It is also about staying sharp, staying open, and keeping a sense of forward motion.

Bottom line

So if you ask whether English is still worth learning in the AI era, my answer is yes, at least for some people.

For me, it is one way to stay connected to a wider world of information while keeping a long-term growth rhythm alive.
